I admittedly didn’t watch both games from start to finish (because of a needed nightly Game of Thrones episode after a night off), but I watched enough of both big college basketball games last night to get a flavor. First of all, I was impressed by my first viewing Jahlil Okafor on the COLLEGE level. Impressive performance against a tough defensive club perennially. 17/5/2 is a solid night on 8-10 shooting in 30 minutes. If you watched the first 5 minutes of the game, you saw a little of everything as far as skills on 4 FG’s. I knew the kid from high school, and wasn’t buying making him preseason POY as a freshman, but I see a possibility now just after watching 1/2 of the game. Good hands, smart mind, great build, nice touch, good handle, cares about defense, shares the ball. Not a bad package. I like Duke’s team overall also as far as balance. I think Michigan State making a deep run this year would be Izzo’s best coaching yet, although the talent is there.
With KU and UK, I was excited to watch the platoon system of UK. I think it is trendy, and not a bad idea if they destroy everyone. But, situational moments, foul problems, bad nights, and injuries will change this approach…or at least alter it once they hit conference play. It is fun for now. I kept watching until the end, and Lindsey asked me why. I said they are destroying a team that easily has Final Four talent and experience at the end of the year. They decimated a talented, well coached, top notch squad…and that is scary. But, I stick to me guns. Although the thought of having a fresh platoon of Mickey D kids coming at you every 4 minutes is scary, I say they trip. I was more impressed than I thought I would be, and had seen most of the kids play a little in high school, but still don’t think they have experience to NOT trip up a couple times. I think UNC or Louisville would be my guesses, and they are on the schedule early. A new found Texas squad will be interesting, and Florida won’t be platoon sacred either.
