Catch of the Day.
The state of American tennis is downright depressing, and has been for a while now. I grew up in the days of McEnroe, Connors doing battle righteously with Lendl, and those fantastic Swedes. Then, I got Sampras, Agassi, and Courier to carry the flag for a while. On the women’s side, we had Tracy Austin, Evert battling Navratilova, Zina Garrison winning a couple here and there, and Pam Shriver playing on the best doubles team in the world. Hell, even the women had Davenport and Capriati do some damage in the 90’s. Now, it is plain scary. You take out the phenoms that are the Williams sisters (about to end their reign), and we have practically nothing. Sloane Stephens is noteworthy and young at #22. Ok. Then you have freaking Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe. What? Don’t retire, Williams A and B. The men’s side is tragic. Isner is #1 for the USA and #14 in the world. Donald Young at #47 is next, Steve Johnson #51, Jack Sock #55 (WHO?), and Sam Querry is #57. So, today, CiCi Bellis beat the Aussie Open runner up and became the youngest women’s player to win a MATCH at the US Open since 1996. Could she be the solution? Probably not. I could spend another 20 minutes breaking down why we suck now, but I don’t have the time, and that is all for now. Just venting. Talk to you tomorrow.
