INTRO/SETTING:

Watching my Phils play the Red Sox on the tube.  Unfortunately, or fortunately for you, I only have an hour.  Too much to do.

EVERGREEN:

  • I think Pete Rose is in the conversation of best five or so players to ever play the game. But, agree with it or not, he broke rules.  He is an outlaw, no matter the influence on the game.  Thus, I get that he feels the need to voice his opinions, but sometimes being in the background and fading into the sunset is the best call.  Charlie Hustle, you were one of the best hitters to ever step into a batting box, but you do NOT have the floor about juicing in baseball, what is right and what is not in today’s game, and whether today’s players follow the code you prefer or not.  Step off the mic Pete.
  • Turner.  Old tweets.  I am tired of this.  Yes, I get that past actions play a part in your story, but digging up old derogatory tweets is reaching for a story.  We all were kids and did dumb stuff.  Let’s let sleeping dogs lie.  Sure, let them give the public apology but then let’s be done with it.  Pull it from the wire after a few hours and call it a day.  Yes.  Social media existed for these players now, and yes, past actions indicate who someone is…to a point.  But fishing for old remnants of badness?  Don’t.
  • The Red Sox and Phillies put on an old school pitching duel last night and it was refreshing. True, we won’t have a reliving of the 90’s Braves where they threw out 4-5 guys that could blank you any given night, but nice to see a low scoring game between two playoff contenders.  But, here is the rub.  Today’s game CAN’T have this happen anymore, and I miss it.  Managers pull pitchers much earlier, invest in setup men more, and the circumstances/perfect storm isn’t allowed to come to fruition much these days.  Think about it.  The Yankees just picked up a prime time CLOSER, and the guy will be a SETUP guy for Chapman.  This hinders young pitchers LEARNING too, as they can’t work their way out of jams and remember how they did it if they never get the chance.  We can’t reset this movement.  It has already happened.  But, always nice (at least for me) to see a game won on who capitalizes on the smallest mistake last.
  • LeBron and his school. LeBron and the Lakers.  LeBron dunking at his kid’s practice.  LeBron feels bad that he put pressure on his kid by naming him after him.  I just need a breather, people, from LeBron.  Yes, I get that we are witnessing the greatest player of our generation and one of the top 2-3 of all time.  But, give us some spaces, media.  Week on, week off during the offseason?  You can save them up like I do in my blog.
  • Vince Carter just signed for his 21st This isn’t amazing because of titles or eye-popping stats.  But, this is still remarkable.  You see, Vince came into the league and was a different version of Jordan, in the way that his game relied on athleticism.  Now, years later, the guy is still good enough to be on an NBA team without those hops or dunks.  You can say he is chasing a title (not obviously with the Hawks) or just getting a paycheck.  But, the way I see it, we are watching a guy who simply LOVES BASKETBALL and has adapted his game to stay at the top tier.

WEEK-FISH:

  • MLB moves: There really is no obvious team that didn’t make a move that should have.  The contenders fine tuned their team with names that not might excite the masses, but will be key additions come October.  Here are a couple that caught my eye in a very active trade deadline:
    • This is bypassing the trades made before my last blog last week…
    • Phils: Cabrera
    • Red Sox-Kinsler
      • WHY are the Angels selling? Giving up?  Yeah, I guess 12.5 games out IS a lot, but I would keep trying because you had Mike Trout alone.
    • Yanks-Lynn
    • Yanks-Happ
    • Astros-Asuna
    • Pirates-Archer (love this move)
    • Dodgers-Dozier
    • Cubs-Hamels (my favorite move, but maybe because he is an ex-Phil)
    • How did the Nats even let rumors that they might trade Harper get OUT???
  • Jerry Jones. You should really stop talking about the anthem.  It is one thing to have one side of a debate really hate you.  It is a whole other item to piss off everyone within a ten-foot concentric circle.  And that, pretty much, is what you are doing.  Any time the word “plantation” gets mentioned in a story, it is usually not good.
  • Why isn’t the TBT getting more press? $2 million dollars on the line, with the following items happening, and I am not getting slammed with media coverage??
    • Jimmer is still in it
    • Every game is pretty much a knowledge test for every hard-core hoops fan
    • Overseas Elite is still in (again)
    • Jimmer is still in it
    • Boeheim’s Army is OUT
    • Jimmer is still in it
  • You can disagree with the foreign soccer player coming overseas to America and talking a lot of smack. But, backing it up?    Zlatan Ibrahimovic (I can now spell it without Googling it) just got a hat trick, his team is hot, and he is all that and a bag of chips.  We Americans suck at soccer.  The past prime guys come over and still kick our butts.
  • Scott Frost’s home was burglarized and I truly enjoyed reading all of the Twitter jokes released about who did it.
  • Melo completed his buyout with the Hawks, and luckily it doesn’t matter if the Rockets sign him or not to still talk about whether the Rockets got worse this offseason.
    • By the way, signing Capela was not an “addition.” It was a “necessity.”
  • Dwight Howard says the Warriors were interested in him. Well, I assume that if looking him up online quickly counts as looking at him, then I guess he is speaking correctly.  I am surprised that HE wasn’t the one who said the earth was flat.
  • You can tune out Deadspin if you want (mistake). But, if you are football fan, and don’t go on daily to check out the Why Your Team Sucks column, then you must hate A) laughing B) info C) and football.
  • Sam Darnold finally got signed by the Jets, and I will say it again. I LOVE Baker Mayfield.  I love everything about him and would want him in my locker room in a heartbeat.  But, if we are taking into account height, measurables, arm strength, and other QB factors, I am still taking Sam Darnold #1 in this year’s draft.
  • DJ Jeffries decommitted from Kentucky. A) We are just happy that SOMEONE said no to the Wildcats in the top tier of talent and B) Penny Hardaway (has ties with) just might have a building block on his new Memphis team.
  • It was news that Johnny Manziel will start in Montreal. This is news?  He got traded oddly after getting picked up, and the coach in Montreal is his old college coach.  2+2.
  • I think the Vikings probably came in with a figure for contracts talks with Diggs, and then said “but since you did what you did on that one play in that playoff game, here is the icing on the cake.”
  • We knew Jimmy Garoppolo was secure with himself. We knew he is cocky.  But, I didn’t figure him to be SO cocky that he takes porn stars out to busy restaurants in public.  That is kind of badass and stupid if you ask me.
  • Forest.  Sound.  WNBA ASG, Tour de France.
  • Well, at least we know what Dez Bryant does on Friday nights and I look forward to this weekend now too.
  • When I think about living a long, fruitful life, I like to think like Bill Murray in What About Bob? Baby steps.  Before I think about being 90 years old, I hope to just outlive Nick Saban’s last existing contract year.  I am just hoping to get past 2025 right now.  Baby steps.
  • That is such a fantastic movie.
  • Finally, I am not attending camps, and Case Keenum is not an announcing type of guy, but apparently it seems obvious that him and the WR’s practiced a LOT over the summer. Evidently, he looks SHARP in practice thus far.

POP CULTURE/THE FILLERBUSTER:

  • Put this in my links, but what EXACTLY was the plan for the aquarium shark robbers when they got the fish outside of the aquarium?
  • As most normal guys do, I don’t believe in the whole Valentine’s Day event, but play along for obvious reasons. But, now Melting Pot has released “we are halfway to Valentine’s Day” dinner special?  Being that my wife is a A) Melting Pot fan and B) sucker for “deals,” I know that I am going, but really, Melting Pot?
    • I will go, if for no other reason, than just to get that killer garlic seasoning they sell there and we put on everything.
  • I chuckled the other day at another “dad” joke. The irony.  I love Dad Jokes, and I won’t be a dad so I can push those jokes on my son or daughter.
  • Hearing that there was a new Cheerios, I Googled it. I know that I beeline it to the original stuff every time, but had NO idea of the amount of flavors out there.    I thought it was just Honey Nut and regular and the new one.  Seriously, but I guess I had never mapped out their expansion plan since I am an original fan through and through.  Anyway, peanut butter chocolate flavored Cheerios?  Wow (thinking I might head to the sweet side).  No!
  • For locals, the movie events in the park across from LaLa’s are with good movies, great atmosphere, and a lot of fun. Tomorrow is a Ferris Bueller showing.  And I don’t know ONE person who doesn’t like THAT movie.
  • Seriously, you have something wrong with you if A) you don’t like the movie and B) you haven’t seen it.
  • In my overwhelming curiosity about Mission Impossible getting good reviews yet not seeing it, I forgot that Tom Cruise does his own stunts. That is impressive.  Also, in my research, I forgot that the last TWO movies scored pretty well on Rotten Tomatoes.  So, I will skip it in the theater.  I can’t get myself to go through that disappointment.
  • My wife had on the TV the other night Naked and Afraid with Sharks. Getting past the concept of having a show concept actually be a success with naked/blurry people being dropped in a wilderness, they really did ANOTHER show adding sharks?  Things that tell me the apocalypse is not too far away. The Sign of the Apocalypse this week in SI, if you are curious, was a man in Virginia calling the cops on a hard foul.  Same level.
  • Humboldt Farm Fish Wine burgers I swear are one of the three best in all of Denver.
  • I went to The Universal’s brunch this weekend since my wife is a brunch addict, and I will go again. It was delicious.  I got some boar scramble that was ridiculous, and only could have been bettered by throwing some cream cheese in it.
  • Of course, in that light, everything can be better with cream cheese in it.
  • We were driving home, and since we live by Sloan’s Lake now, we thought we should drop by the Dragonboat Festival held there this past weekend. I had NO idea that it was a “thing.”  It was about four times bigger than I expected, booths and demonstrations all over the place, and, of course, boat races.
  • In my weekly plug now, you need to check out the music of Chris Toler. Saw him in Key West, he lived in Colorado, and the guy should be on the radio and winning music awards.  THAT good.
  • I went to Lucky Pie and got sub-par service with a soggy pizza that costs $22. Like seeing a bad movie on MoviePass and being able to write it off mentally, I only didn’t complain because we had PassBook and we got the other item for free.  I always say “there is no bad pizza” in life, but they were very near the bottom considering the price of the pie.
  • That same night, I was supposed to attend a magic show downtown. We got to the doors and there was a NOTE on the door apologizing for no performance that night.  No notification.    But, we were dressed up and downtown, so decided to check out what was at Buell Theater.  Les Mis.  My brief notes:
    • I think I accepted when I thought that I liked Les Mis, but then remembered ten minutes in that it was Phantom of the Opera I kind of liked the tunes for. Somewhat of a mix-up.
    • I successfully did NOT fall asleep. Mainly, because I paid for it.  The only thing in a theater I paid for that I have feel asleep during was oddly, Robocop II.
    • I definitely am not a musical guy outside of Book of Mormon and that one single song from Greatest Showman.
    • I am musical, so I DO admit that the talent on stage was pretty stellar though.
    • There will NOT be a second viewing by The Fillerbuster.
  • I went to a museum the next day for a wife’s family get together. Yes, I had an aloof, scholarly weekend.  What I learned:
    • I was saying I was sad we only got 30 minutes before our Dead Sea Scrolls viewing to walk the museum, but I would be lying and think I was posting some fluff.
    • There are two types of hips in a dinosaur and they indicate whether they eat veggies or meat.
    • There is something called the Kansas Coastline I forgot I might have learned about.
    • I learned about the KT Boundary.
    • Colorado houses a lot of fossils, but they happen to populate the most amount of findings for one of my favorite dinosaurs, the Triceratops.
    • I probably should have figured, but did not know Wyoming had a rain forest at one time.
    • I knew that dinosaurs are linked with birds, but did not know there was an actual bird CALLED the raptor.
    • I heard an employee break the news to an 8 year old that the raptors in Jurassic Park are much larger than they really were. Dinosaur version of Santa Claus I think.
    • The Piglike Entelodont (not checking the spelling) lived in Nebraska.
    • Tortoises are a good indicator of ancient climate.
    • I forgot that Mammoths got over here via the Bering Strait thing that used to exist. I think I already knew that, but successfully forgot it evidently.
    • They are finding new species in Madagascar all the time.
    • The Nature & Science museum is HAPPENING with people on Sunday afternoons. Crazy busy.  Irritatingly busy even without all of the boring exhibits.
    • Once you see one Dead Sea Scroll, you have seen them all, and it was very irritating how SLOWLY people moved looking at them, like they were doing a report on it later, or the fact they were reading each one told other people they were smart.
    • We attended an I-Max of Jerusalem after the scrolls. Cool flick.  Cooler since every place they showed, I had been last year.
    • Hey, Dead Sea Scrolls, I even swam in that thing, ok? I floated.
    • I am not a museum guy.
  • The Air BNB is ready to go and being rented next week. Like I learned while selling the house with the security cam, my wife will be ADDICTED to these reviews we get.  I don’t have to worry about someone not answering those reviews.
  • Why did we know about Mission Impossible from TV commercials like 7 months ago, yet I just started hearing about the better LOOKING movie with a better actor (Marky Mark), Mile 22, just last week. Looks pretty stellar.
  • The Red Lobster joke is now dead. One week after busting out her first Cracker Barrell, we took care of a Red Lobster visit.  Seafood version of Applebee’s I guess, but do people go there REGULARLY????  That place is pricey.
  • Yes, betting on baseball is filling the gap nicely until football season.
  • MoviePass.  I talk about that great deal ALL the time.  Well, it is such a good deal that it didn’t work one night because apparently they didn’t pay the bills or something.
  • We used a coupon on Lakeside amusement park too last week. I forgot how awesomely old and about to break but FUN the Cyclone is.
  • Lime Scooters are back in Denver, people. I would hop on this bandwagon.  They are FUN.  Feel too guilty about taking an Uber, but acknowledge that it is too far to walk.  Perfect Lime scooter situation.
  • I have finished compromised watching with Lindsey of Sharp Objects. Well done, dark, great acting, etc.  But:
    • I can’t be on a laptop watching it with Lindsey. They do these flash images every few minutes, and they seem important in the long run.    They last about a third of a second.
    • I would say the show is losing me and I want to give up, but it did a good enough job at hooking me that now I HAVE to know what happens. Kind of like a less action packed Westworld.  I want to know WHY!!!
    • Watching a series one by one these days where you are interested is exhausting.
    • No, I am NOT reading the books. Lindsey did though.
    • Not as good as Billions, and hope my wife remembers how much I would like to be watching THAT show soon. She goes on a vacation with a friend in September.  That series is DONE by her return if we don’t do some damage before then.
  • I think certain technology gets overlooked in its genius. I personally think that making an ice maker that works constantly for a long term is tough and a fantastic creation.
  • The announcer just said 1000 percent. I find it irritating, as isn’t percent in meaning BASED on a hundred?  100% is max.

TWEET OF THE WEEK:

This is amazing to me…
