FILLERBUSTER’S ELEVEN
BACKGROUND: Barely edited as usual unfortunately, so please excuse any mistakes during my stream of consciousness. I feel the need…the need for speed. Let’s turn and burn.
SETTING: On an Airplane, to and from Albuquerque, and then finished on a week night before heading to San Diego this weekend. I promise to get back to longer hooks and evergreen items, but not yet. Too much to catch on this round. I need to blog more, and for lesser amounts.
- NFL:
- You didn’t need a blog from me pre-Super Bowl. You didn’t want to hear about how I had a future on the Rams and hedged on the Bengals. Win-win.
- Matthew Stafford advanced to the teenagers’ table in the world of QB NFL legends. You win one? You are in some of those conversations. Two? You go to the Big Boy’s table. Stafford can hang out with the bully from the teenagers’ table…Aaron Rodgers.
- Stafford needs to avoid watching photographers fall and walking away though (if you haven’t seen it, Google it). It was at the parade.
- And just in case you are TRYING to find any reason to dislike Joe Burrow, keep trying. He apparently won over the Bengals locker room when telling a story on racial injustice. The dude is just too perfect.
- But remember. Of the 16 past QB’s who lost their Super Bowl debut, NONE have even made it back to the final game again. Not won it, but even made it BACK.
- That OBJ halftime injury sure jacked up my prop bets. After the first score, I thought it was going to be EASY.
- I am quite entertained by the news of Shailene Woodley and Aaron Rodgers separating. So, either this is a non-issue related to his decision, it means he is NOT coming to Denver because he broke up with his girl, or…he WILL come to Denver to plaster his face all over his ex’s town out of spite.
- By the way, is it me, or does Aaron Rodgers sincerely carry himself like he has won multiple Super Bowls? I mean. He will never be at the low level of, say a Jeff George, but come on, man. You have ONE ring (over my team unfortunately), and have had many, many good teams. Maybe be a little more humble, bro. You are like Donovan McNabb Take Two. Until Aaron cools off, we will just accept him as weird. An oddball. Someone who goes to Panchakarma events and comes back and delivers cryptic Instagram feeds. No wonder him and the Boulder chick got along so well.
- The Broncos hire a Rodgers ex-QB coach as head coach. Then, the Packers hire his old mentor on THEIR staff. They can pretend like these moves aren’t to get him back. They are.
- Given the misinformation during the retirement of Tom Brady, the odd delay, and the fact that his goodbye social media post ONLY mentioned Tampa Bay, I assume he will come back for some team come this August once the tough parts of training camp are done.
- Brian Flores and his lawsuit needed to happen after many Rooney Rule processes where people were simply going through the motions. But, my concern is that A) it will be too hard to prove and B) a very good head coach won’t get a job again as teams will be scared to hire him. Listen, the diversity hiring practices DO stink. Rooney tried, and now people make a choice and just follow protocol to stay out of trouble. Everyone seriously needs to reexamine their franchise and their approach, as it is ridiculous the amount of black coaches we have in the NFL.
- Since writing the above last week, the Steelers have hired Flores. Love it. Proud to be a fan of that franchise. He is a great football mind, and should have a job. Apparently, he turned down millions by not signing an NDA with the Dolphins before exiting.
- Hue Jackson popped up with HIS allegations at the weirdest, badly times window. You sounded like you were just piling on, man. Now, I have heard nothing since. Weird.
- I think I will root for the comedian to buy the Broncos for no reason at all except for funny pressers.
- I dig the Commanders nickname for the Washington franchise, and I think it will grow on the naysayers. It drips of what that region of the country is about, isn’t gray area or controversial on anything, and is strong in nature. I think the committee or whatever they called themselves did just fine. When the Memphis hoops team is still the Grizzlies, then let’s just embrace the nicknames that DO make sense.
- The Jags hired Doug Pederson. Say what you want about him as a coach. Trevor will say “Coach, why should I do this?” Coach will say “because I already won a Super Bowl.”
- So, I don’t feel that bad for that Niners fan who ended up in a coma after the NFC Championship. Video says he went up and pushed the other guy, the guy turned around, decked him, and walked off. Just stop talking smack and pushing people.
- We hear a lot about Mattress Mack when he MAKES the $9.5 million in bets, but then we sort of never hear anything when he loses.
- Chad Johnson apparently has people turn down his dinner invites. That is sort of funny. He makes the no-shows public.
- Alvin Kamara needs to understand that once you beat the streets and become big time and successful, you can’t go around acting like a street person looking for trouble of helpless people late at night. Shame.
- The Texans might not have had Lovie Smith as their first choice, but it is a SAFE pick. They pick a QB who gets 20 plus allegations made against him for improper massages, they trade away their locker room presence in JJ Watt, and then oddly fire a first-year coach when he was dealing with all of this. They apparently just wanted a leader who had done it before. They get that in Lovie. Not a big splash pick, but a SAFE pick.
- When Kyler Murray first scrubbed his social media pages of any Cardinals reference, it was a theory that he might go to baseball. Now, rumors are swirling about him being a finger-pointer, a bad teammate, and a spoiled brat. Well, maybe he SHOULD take a look at baseball now. What part of him has not accepted that after watching that game tape, HE was a large part of the problem?
- It is about damn time that Dick Vermeil gets into the HOF. Long, LONG overdue.
- So, the Adrian Peterson story was about a purse argument on the plane. Whoever broke that story put the cart before the horse slightly.
- Everyone relax about Devin Hester not getting in. He will, as he revolutionized the position. Well, he furthered it from a couple other guys like Gale Sayers and Mel Gray. He will get in, but I guess they will do the stupid baseball thing and make him wait some years to sweat it out.
- I can’t believe we just went through another head coach hiring cycle and Eric Bieniemy still doesn’t have a job. Shameful.
- I almost missed Eminem kneeling because I was too busy watching Dr. Dre play the keys.
- COLLEGE FOOTBALL:
- OK. To most, Malik Willis is just a small-college QB coming out in the draft and people are Googling him right now. Well, I got news for you. I want him as the new Steelers QB. He transferred from a big school (Auburn), and chose Liberty to rebrand his college career. He is mobile, smart, and has a rocket for an arm. Case in point. Josh Allen had the record for air speed from a QB throw…until THIS year. (75.7 to 66.1). He didn’t simply beat the strongest arm in the NFL right now…he blew it out of the water.
- Bama’s defensive coordinator got a DUI a couple weeks ago. I see he found a NEW way to stop a drive. Hardy har har.
- If Michigan and Jim Harbaugh were married, Michigan just let him go out and sleep with someone, and then took him back in the morning.
- COLLEGE BASKETBALL:
- So, Chris Beard leaves Texas, takes some players, and STILL is behind Texas Tech in the Big 12 standings. As Seinfeld once said, the best revenge is living well.
- If you haven’t ever caught a Bill Walton-announced college basketball game, I urge you to check out the Pac-12 games on Thursday nights and pray you strike gold. You feel like he might have actually done some shrooms right before tip.
- Speaking of the Conference of Champions, shame on UCLA redshirt freshman Mac Etienne. He spit on a fan as they exited after getting run by Arizona. The kicker is the redshirt part. Dude wasn’t even involved in the sporting embarrassment ON the floor, and he still got the urge. There are many reasons I am not a coach in college, and I know these are kids, but that kid would be off my team the next day if I found out about that or watched that video. The kid probably is pushing down other demons also.
- Let’s not say “What is wrong with Baylor?” They lost three kids to the NBA, and are starting reserves or transfers. Let’s just say “They overachieved the first half of the season.”
- How UVA could hit that three and beat Duke at Cameron, and then lose to Virginia Tech when their season is pretty much on the line is beyond me. Then, they gave Duke a run at home last night. The eye test tells us that UVA is a tournament team, but their resume will be denied. They have to win the ACC tourney now.
- Damn, I miss Dick Vitale announcing college hoops. Get better, bro.
- Texas can beat anyone on any given night, and lose to anyone on any given night. When looking for a 3-14, 4-13, or 5-12 upset, look no further, folks. Teams like Murray State, St. Mary’s, San Francisco, and South Dakota will have them in their sights.
- Remember the name Shaedon Sharpe. He won’t play this year, and probably will be a lottery pick next year. He possibly could come out of nowhere (outside of basketball circles) and become a legit star and never suit up for Calipari.
- I don’t totally trust Auburn like some other people. Smith is the real deal. The rest of their squad is decent. But, if they win this thing, I will compare it to Carmelo’s run with the Cuse. Jabari will have to put them on his back.
- Michigan will somehow end up in the tourney as a very bad seed, and scare the crap/beat a couple teams before going quietly into the night. Their draw will catch up to them, but no one wants to see them in March.
- And on the Juwan Howard item. He threw a slap, and not a punch by the way. Yes, he was totally wrong. Yes, he should have come clean right AFTER it happened. Yes, I think his suspension was about the right amount, and I don’t think he should be fired. Instead of saying a bunch of breakdown that everyone else has been saying, I will just say this. Stole this from a Tweet. If Juwan should be slapping anyone over a wrongful timeout, it should be Chris Webber. Hardy har har.
- And getting rid of the handshake line in college hoops might be the dumbest thing I have heard this year. You need to learn to face the person who just beat you down on the court.
- NBA:
- The Ben Simmons drama is over…for now. I am not buying in, have another reason to root against the Nets, and can’t wait to see the method of the flameout. Dude is not all there between the ears.
- Joel Embiid is having a stellar, MVP-worthy year, but I think even he would say that Jokic beats him by a nose thus far. It will be interesting to see how the ball-dominant Harden affects Embiid’s output AND the Sixers’ winning.
- Even though it was funny when James Harden was picked last in the All Star draft, I hate the picking-teams format, and feel like it decimates the pride of each conference. Yes, I am also very much against combining conferences in the playoffs. Everything is cyclical. Let things play out.
- Think about it folks. Giannis took 21 total shots in getting 50 points a week ago. Do the math. Ridiculous.
- I admit to not watching a second of KAT taking the three-point contest, or Obi winning the dunk contest. All ASG events, including the game, are too diluted for me these days. I won’t ever get a Dominique-Jordan showdown and I will be mad until I go below.
- The Chris Paul injury will not bring the Suns too far down. What it WILL do is possibly take away home court advantage from them, and that might be key.
- Luka is being humble, and putting everyone on notice about the “out-of-shape” comments. Cuban says the comments got him motivated. Man, I love Luka. And love a Mad Luka even more.
- And the Porzingis experiment didn’t work and/or The Unicorn was injured frequently. I like the trade. Porzingis gets a change of scenery, and we can finally figure out if Spencer Dinwiddie was a Linsanity flash in the pan or not.
- If James Harden doesn’t win a title either this year or next, his legacy gets very muddled, doesn’t it? Instead of being a Philly savior, he will simply be the guy who demands trades out of situations and then underperforms in the playoffs.
- Sad to see Bradley Beal out of the year. He was one of the feel-good stories of the year. So close to becoming the next tier of superstar, and the Wizards came out of the gates blazing and then reality hit.
- No one expected the Kings to give up Tyrese Haliburton as we thought he was the guard for their future, and you have to wonder how important he was in that deal, but have you seen Sabonis’s stats on his new team? Solid.
- I never understood the pairing of CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard. Redundant in so many ways. So, for better or worse, glad they each get to do their own thing on the court now.
- Kind of like I never understood the pairing of Russell Westbrook with AD and LeBron. And that was a correct misunderstanding.
- AD is hurt again, and this seems to be a trend. I personally am not sure how he made the 75th anniversary team. He is a game changer…when healthy. So were a lot of guys in the history of basketball. How does Alex English not make that team, and AD does? Too short of tenure for AD.
- Ruthless and business is business. Joe Engles tears up his knee and is GONE a few days later. Brutal for someone who was a locker room presence, model citizen, decent player, and just a good guy.
- Goran Dragic, all 34 years of him, went to the Evil Empire…the Nets. I wanted more from him out of his last run, and didn’t want any reasons to root for them, but apparently the ties with Steve Nash were too strong.
- Serge Ibaka got traded to the Bucks. Man, he is going to be a great trivia question someday. The Bucks are defending champions. They are just crossing their t’s and dotting their I’s for the second half stretch. Depth, depth, and more depth. They learned the equation last year, and are quietly just doing their thing.
- Tyreke Evans used to be really good. Tyreke Evans has been reinstated by the NBA. If I am a team looking for guard depth for the stretch run, I am checking him out. If I am the Nuggets, I text him.
- JJ Redick called him out on it, but Zion does act weird and SHOULD pick up the phone and call the new guard who will be passing him the ball eventually (McCollum). That dude was going to change the NBA with both brute force and skill, but now must be attending Panchakarma’s with Aaron Rodgers.
- NHL:
- Sidney Crosby just got his 500th goal. Weird career. He was the chosen one and going to break all of the records. He then won a couple titles, but cooled off stat-wise. Then, some injuries. Now, his team is still in the win column this year, but hasn’t been a force in a while. Quietest 500th goal in a while, and to think he is only 34 years old…
- MLB:
- Spring training is delayed until March 5th. And steroid testing is non-existent now. Maybe steroids can save baseball again when fans get all pissed off again.
- Hey, Joe West. 5460 games is a LOT. Thanks for being a great umpire.
- I wonder if Honus Wagner somehow knows his card just sold for $475k. I bet he does. I tried to get into the baseball card scene. I think I just didn’t like gum that much.
- I knew it. I knew Trevor Bauer would get off easy. No charges. He just had some weird sex needs and those weird sex needs unfortunately require a really crazy chick to accept.
- Ryan Zimmerman is retiring, and he is Mr. Nationals. He was a community icon, consistent in his play, and helped them to a World Series championship. How I didn’t know he was a UVA guy is saddening. He would have been my favorite player his whole career!
- OLYMPICS
- I love the Winter Olympics because I am not good at nor understand most of the sports.
- I know I am personally in the digital signage industry and you are probably not, but man…those opening ceremony visuals were pretty dope.
- Is the cross-country ski thing where you shoot at a target with a gun a sport version of old-time snow survival stuff in Europe?
- I really, really, really wanted Shaun White to medal in his last Olympics, but I hear it is really, really, really hard and he is sort of older now. Sad.
- The rant by the announcer right after he was done, including how Shaun was a legend, mentor, and badass, really brought everything home for me personally. Nice monologue.
- Sometimes I feel like I have to be told something is a “quad.” I just see a lot of spinning.
- I still don’t fully understand the difference between ice dancing and figure skating.
- I feel like Johnny Weir or whoever was announcing figure skating early on sounded like (mannerisms not voice) Tony Romo.
- Johnny Weir’s outfits….wow.
- So, apparently I need to check out the Playboy with the German Olympians, or I guess I should have done that BEFORE the games.
- I feel bad for Shiffrin and all of her DNF’s. She really struggles with English for an American chick. We beat the system on that one early on.
- On the opposite of the rid-your-demons coin, glad to see Nathan Chen finally do it right. Like Maverick’s old man. Heck of a skate, Nathan.
- I can’t decide if I enjoyed the surprised score at the end of figure skating, or if I dug the escalating score with a target of what to catch.
- How are the Germans SO much better than anyone else at the bobsled and luge?
- Thanks for falling, Russian chick who was cheating in figure skating. Made it easy on us.
- Nice to see Chloe Kim continue her run also.
- Norway ended up running away with the most medals, and they are very good at this Winter Games stuff.
- The US once again proved that it truly WAS a Miracle On Ice way back when. No luck in this year’s Olympics in grabbing gold.
- The closing ceremony was more people oriented, but also had a badass digital footprint.
- MISCELLANEOUS:
- I guess it makes sense that Money would get into the NASCAR scene with all of the cars he owns, but seems so…odd. Dude has so much money and apparently not enough hobbies in retirement.
- I thought I was old when Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe first became mainstays on the USWNT. Now, they have come, won, and gone, and I really am looking in the mirror.
- If you feel lazy today, know that a high school wrestler in Virginia just won the state wrestling title for his weight. He was born with no legs, and 1 finger on his right hand.
- I hate Stephen A. enough, but do NOT call out my fellow Cav, Tiki Barber. He has more knowledge and class then you would know what to do with, Stephen A. Wahoowa.
- I can easily state I won’t watch one second of the XFL, no matter how bored I am that particular day. I will watch a show. I might even watch a Dateline with my wife…
- (nahh…)
- The state of New York bet $2 billion in the first month of sports betting being legalized. That is billion with a B. Crazy.
- Why is your allegiance to a particular professional golf league suddenly a story? Morikawa announcing allegiance, Phil apologizing, Greg Norman forming a Super Golf league…just be glad people care about the sport, all. Greg countering. There is a part of me who wants to find out more detail to be more engaged on the struggle, but then I realize I don’t really care much.
- I always tell my wife “imagine if I had to watch Champions League TOO….”
- Djokovic lost to a qualifier, lost the #1 ranking, and it would be so weird if a vaccination was the culprit for slowing down the best player in the world.
- THIS AND THAT:
- The masses were right, and my wife and I finally bought in. Be prepared to ruin your day or night if you also have not latched on, but Squid Game is the real deal. It makes you cringe. It makes you think. And it makes you try and predict. It was already good even before the massive twist at the end, and not sure where one storyline went, but overall it is solid. I would have been out a FEW times during the show.
- In the Dark HAD us for a season plus. In the Dark LOST us for 3-4 episodes. Then, we gave it one more shot, and it is now FANTASTIC again as we near the end of Season 2. Highly recommend. It is like the writers went out and got drunk, woke up for the end of season 2 sober, and locked in again. And the ending again makes you want more immediately.
- I finished Cobra Kai. Fantastic. Beyond fantastic. With crappy 80’s rock, constant Rocky and Top Gun references, and the nonstop wondering of how karate fights between kids can be this widespread in any town without police interference, it is 1984 relived.
- My wife is watching that Playboy documentary, and I am sometimes in the room. Again, the WIFE is watching the Playboy documentary.
- The Witcher somehow lost us as far as binge-watching. We destroyed the first season, but somehow are struggling to stay hooked on this season, where he is watching the girl, who now appears to be training a real Witcher.
- We paused on Ozark but will be continuing that next week. Solid thus far.
- We got Red Rocks Billy Strings tickets. That is my wife’s favorite musician these days, and a tough ticket to get to say the least.
- How is Wordle popular again? Is Wheel of Fortune popular again too? All I know is that I am a closer on the game. My wife shows me ones that stump her, and I consistently figure it out.
- So Spirit and Frontier are merging. Remember when Frontier rocked years ago with the TV screen? No more. Remember when Spirit was cool? It wasn’t. Basically, the two airlines we all try and avoid have combined forces. I still don’t understand what I am buying initially if I have to pay for my seats again, my bags again, my carry on’s, etc. I am paying for a FULL ride, folks.
- I voted every day, and not sure it pulled it off, but Soggy Dollar in the British Virgin Islands better at least get SECOND in the best beach bar out there.
- I keep saying how the Pandemic really jacked up the way we watch movies. The order is different, the timing is different, and we have to hear about movies half the time from friends. I looked at the Oscar nomination list. Not only have my friends not passed info or nor seen many of the movies on the list. Lots of catching up to do…
- I have nothing against Applebees. And I love the theme song from Cheers. But, let’s recognize when a square is going in a round hole and not match the two up. No one goes to Applebees to meet up with their drinking friends.
- LOCAL
- How is everyone in CO enjoying the stereotypical 7 degree weather? The rest of the country won’t hear about the 50 degree day right before these two days, nor the multiple 50 degree days after these two days.
- The bartender at Billy’s Inn just makes that place better than it already is…for both food and drink. Daniel. I can never figure out why people don’t go there on the weekends, but check them out during the week or for weekend brunch.
- We checked out a place called Voghera on Tennyson the other day. It was a little classy for me, but I adapted. If you want a moderately priced happy hour that brings down classy wine place prices, I recommend. We will eat a fancy holiday dinner there at some point, but a little above my atmosphere ceiling.
- The Bindery is a step above the previous hook. Their happy hour is very happy hour priced. Reasonable, AND an IPA on tap on special. The fries are good, but not as good as Ash’Kara’s happy hour fries.
- I am expanding my horizons. I had more sushi the other day. For the price, Sushi Bay on Tennyson is well worth it.
- For days when we both work remote, and for when we want to blow off the gym, we found great lunch specials at El Camino and Fire on the Mountain.
- Finally, no masks at the gym, at lunch, at dinner, etc. I don’t mind at all that some of the places we go to require vaccination proof.
- Next year, when they do Dark Side of the Moon at the Oriental, YOU should go. We have been the last two years and it is awesome, both musically and visually.
- The breakfast pizza at Supper Club on 44th is pretty darn good.
- The far side of the bar at Three Dogs Tavern is my favorite place in our immediate area. Golden Tee, pool table, shuffleboard, Ski-Ball, and plenty of TV’s. And access to a jukebox.
- The Ginger Pig not only evolved from a food truck, but their happy hour includes great food and an IPA.
- If you need any type of greeting card and are driving through the Highlands during your buying cycle for this holiday, then you are cheating yourself by not checking out Wordshop on 32nd.
- We did not get to go to the annual Golden Retriever get-together in Golden. Wife was heartbroken, and kennel cough from the daycare place did us in. I had no idea that Robitussin worked for dogs as well as humans.
- Rupert’s at Sloan’s Lake is ALWAYS busy. We woke up early on a weekend, and decided to check it out. Good food and good service, but no creativity on the menu. Just standard stuff. Confused why it is such the rage, but I guess people like simplicity.
- As an ex-bartender and someone who knows the industry well, I would never walk out on a tab. Pancho had his birthday Hibachi near his new place at Benihana at Tamarac Square. Do NOT go there. After being delayed on seating for 90 minutes, they still didn’t have their service in order, and another 40 minutes went by until one side got water. The manager came out and was unprofessional and defensive. He asked us to leave, although we were classy and still paid out our drinks. My wife and I had to grab some fries at Billy’s Inn before they closed just to eat for the first time in 6 hours. Hibachi is cool. Don’t go there.
- I may or may not have gone home and made my own Hibachi movie for Pancho since we had to walk out. Epic video.
- I went and watched Hamilton at Buell Theater this past weekend. I have music in my background and recognize that it was a genius performance. You should see it, and it is one tough ticket to get. That being said, since ALL musicals are not my thing, this was simply the best of the worst. I can’t take people singing what they are saying. So, my wife knows I appreciated it, but also knows she can take someone else on her next watching of it.
- When a bill is close to $50 for me, I always hope it is 5150, after the best album ever. So close recently. Had a 5151, 5051, 5450…
- My wife and I did Valentines Day at the speakeasy Williams and Graham (disguised as a library). I couldn’t decide between the mac and cheese and burger, and she loves me so much that we just split both. Both were off the charts and some of the best I have ever had.

Well, we are getting out of this cold weather to head to San Diego to see a friend for a few days. Check out Hotel Solamar if ever heading to Gaslamp. Great hotel that you can get on special frequently.
The theme? I may or may not have left Hamilton, played pool with a buddy, jumped on a scooter to go to his place, face-planted on the sidewalk when hitting ice, and partially broken my nose and bruised my front tooth. So, a scooter I am not having moving forward and that sounds like Scooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore, and Panchakarma is a cool word to be in the title. Got it?
And our weekly reminder of the greatest sequel ever made coming out this summer (hopefully)… Top Gun 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8z1rqA8jRw&vl=en
That’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed. Remember two things. First, feed yourself, feed your family, but always, always remember to…feed the wolf. Second, if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker. Will I blog again? That is a CLOWN question, bro. As one shepherd said to the other shepherd, let’s get the flock out of here.
