Too Many Jokes
- I got behind for this post. WAY too much to go over in detail. I actually had this thing mostly written a couple of weeks ago, but then let it age before finishing. So, I started from scratch last night. I am spending too much time with my dog I guess. I trimmed down the list and will do what most of my readers hate. One bold statement on each item I want to cover, but then I will move on. I will try and either allocate my time better for shorter, more frequent blogs, or get back in the saddle on the podcast initiative. In no particular order…
- I admit it. I thought I was going to watch a meltdown on Sunday at The Masters. I thought Scottie would do the leading-my-first-Major fallout. It didn’t happen. He walked that course like he had already one a Major, hit it in safe places, and no one made a move outside of I-only-play-two-good-rounds-at Augusta-each-year Rory McIlroy. And Cameron Smith looked anything BUT one of those ultra-cool Aussies who have won on the tour previously. Scottie even kind of made it boring as far as pressure shots and any clogged leaderboard. Actually, the last three have been sort of done by 16 or so. The Dustin, Hideki, and Scottie wins were more celebratory than competitive (Hideki win looks closer than it was). The Tiger win in 2019 was magical in its own way. I hope we get a jammed up leaderboard net year, although watching The Masters with any leaderboard is special.
- Kansas beat UNC for the college basketball title. They pretty much had the red carpet laid out for them. They had to beat Miami to get to the Final Four, and then beat Villanova team that was missing their second leading scorer, and then a UNC with no depth anyway and their big guy pretty much playing on one leg. Bill Self now has the same amount of titles as active allegations against him by the NCAA.
- Bacot is coming back for unfinished business, so UNC isn’t going anywhere. Neither is Gonzaga, KU, Baylor, UCLA, nor Houston. I think Arkansas is the best team pre-transfer portal though. Plus, they keep knocking on the door a little harder each year. I see Arkansas vs. UNC as of right now, ridiculously early in the process.
- What really is a downer about any small team that makes a tourney run is the immediate exits. Saint Peters. Coach? Gone. Most star players? Transferring. Really sad that they get their 15 minutes, and the odds that the 15 minutes will get extended just gets trounced immediately after before the paint dries.
- The irony of the entire college basketball season was that all we talked about (me included) was parity. What did we get in the Final Four? Blue bloods.
- MLB pulled it together and we had an opening day after all of the greedy owners and players met in the middle. I took off the afternoon and enjoyed the Rockies opening day, and it felt good to say a nice goodbye to the pandemic, because Blake Street looked like it was 2019 again. Now I begin my annual “I am a Phillies fan” but might jump aboard the Rockies bandwagon if they show promise. And the Rockies are 8-3, and presently taking it TO the Phillies.
- No one in Denver-on the radio, writing a blog, or walking the streets-could figure out the Rockies’ front office strategy, but it is sure temporarily working.
- The commercial where Justin Thomas is telling Colin Jost to do chores around the house to improve his swing with Danielson making an appearance at the end is freaking hilarious. I rank the Matthew Stafford-AT&T one second of recent ads.
- Joel Embiid won the NBA scoring title but his team wasn’t a #1 seed. Giannis came on late in the season and impressed us. But, Jokic formed his own “ever” category, had better stats than his MVP season, and had no supporting cast. He better get the MVP.
- I don’t get the players nor the team (Nuggets) in handling the Porter and Murray injuries. If they are done for season, just shut them down and stop going game to game. If we are going game to game with injury status, then stop pretending that fans don’t know they have been out of commission this whole season…and Jokic could use a little help against the Death Lineup.
- Russell Westbrook had his chance to carry a team to the playoffs, with his sidekicks injured here and there, and the chemistry throwing up red flags before the paint on the trade even dried. He did not. Coach is gone. He then threw ex-coach under the bus. That team is a freaking mess. I still don’t understand who thought it was a good idea to bring a ball-dominant PG who can’t shoot from long range to a team with LeBron on it. That kind of goes against the grain.
- Marcus Smart being the first guard since 1996 to win the DPOY was cool. The Glove flying in to present it to him in Boston was even better.I am not altering my opinion from the third week of the NBA season. Miami over Phoenix in 6 for the NBA title.
- I just can’t do it. I love, love, love the sport of football. But, the XFL and USFL will not get any of my attention. I am sorry to those leagues. You can finally settle the technology that relinquishes any spot to a physical chain-dragging spot, but I still just want to watch the best players.
- THANK you, airlines, Uber, Lyft, and the rest of the party. I am so over masks.
- I really want to talk about the death of Dwayne Haskins more. I want to talk about the quality of person he was and the loss of a QB in the Steelers locker room. But, I will stay away. Given his couple brushes with the law previously, and the fact that we know that he was in a disabled vehicle with an inebriated female driver at 7am on a highway…it makes me stay away.
- I really wouldn’t mind at all if the Steelers picked up Baker Mayfield. Not at ALL.
- Man, I haven’t blogged since Russell Wilson was picked up? That IS a while. The town is electric. The talking heads have a swagger now. New coach, new QB, new outlook on the playoffs. I still think the Broncos paid their pretty good WR tandem a year early (wait another year on Jeudy development in my opinion), but the trade broke open the draft options now instead of guessing on a subpar QB class, and they have a young, talented defense that might be able to excel more with the offense doing more for longer on the field. That being said… If football was the World Cup, the AFC is the Group of Death. The fact that those four QB’s have to play each OTHER twice a year is downright scary.
- You have a QB and WR with a cheat code, and you trade away the WR proactively. That is just weird, Chiefs, no matter WHO you get back. I was floored on the Tyreek Hill trade.
- If you asked me who the least likely coach to go to a front office would be in my opinion, I would have said Bruce Arians in my first three guesses. Is he going to outdrink or beat up other executives?
- Ovechkin is quietly third all-time in goals scored. At 36 years young, he might get higher on the list. He has had sort of a Brett Hull type of career. Got his title, multiple scoring titles, will be known as a winner and wicked shot.
- Trust me. I am skipping LOADS of stuff on this list.
- The USMNT got a pretty good draw for the World Cup. Two teams advance, and if we can’t advance past Iran and the European Playoff Winner with England, then we shouldn’t be there and Americans are pumped faked on potential for our country on the big stage yet again.
- I don’t “root” for celebrities to get arrested, but I could have predicted YEARS ago that Hope Solo would go down after her athletic career for SOMETHING. She did some stuff. Drinking and driving with your kids in the car and getting busted would have qualified for my Rant Squad years ago.
- Meanwhile, Mike Tyson is selling cannabis shaped like his ear. Brilliant. The one we expected to go DOWN went up…
- A shout out to a UVA grad, Dawn Staley, who just won her second national title with South Carolina. She has built a machine there. And she probably would have won another one if not for the pandemic.
- I don’t have any show updates for you. I am behind…and there are too many shows. I am focusing on finishing Ozark (finally) and busting out Billions next. Just found out Barry is starting up again, so that is high on my list also. My wife has gone through the Playboy documentary, the Pamela-Tommy Lee show, and a couple others in some down time.
- Skipping ALL of the This and That stuff this time around.
- Skipping all local stuff this time around, BUT I am back to writing Google reviews about anything and everything.
- Skipping all Fillerbuster stuff. I will update you next time. 6 year anniversary, big trip coming up, new job is fantastic, wife and dog are well.
- Skipping Oscars breakdown, but will remind you that recently THIS movie anniversary happened. One of the best sports movies ever. ‘White Men Can’t Jump’ at 30 – Sneakers, bets and stories from an all-time sports movie (espn.com)
- I just realized that I am releasing this on 4/20. Accidental, too funny, but yay for Colorado for getting you all to get your puppies organized on THAT item, as Mr. Raftery would say. And we now are leaders in another category, as Charlie Blackmon of the Rockies just became the first active MLB player to be a sponsor for a sportsbook.
- I will make sure I get another one out before our next trip. Costa Rica. That is on May 14th.
- I at least keep up on Twitter. Here are some of my favorites since I have been gone.
(1) Doug Gottlieb on Twitter: “Russell Wilson no longer a fan of the corner 3” / Twitter
That’s it for today. Let’s try and reconvene in a shorter time interval so you get more time-sensitive material, and I don’t get overwhelmed with my list to write about.
The theme? Too many jokes from Friends, as when Chandler can’t streamline to one joke about Joey because Joey has left the opening for many jokes. Similar to that, I had too many things on my list to bring to the table.
And our constant reminder of the greatest sequel ever made coming out in the next month or two… Top Gun 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8z1rqA8jRw&vl=en
Been so long since I wrote that they have come out with a NEW trailer: Top Gun: Maverick | NEW Official Trailer (2022 Movie) – Tom Cruise – YouTube
That’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed. Remember two things. First, feed yourself, feed your family, but always, always remember to…feed the wolf. Second, if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker. Will I blog again? That is a CLOWN question, bro. As one shepherd said to the other shepherd, let’s get the flock out of here.
