SETTING:

This is the first time in a while I am writing this ALL in one bit.  I am catching my post work Thursday Seinfeld episodes, and then watching the Thursday Night Football game.  My work is kind of chaotic, my weekend is jammed, so let’s do this.  I will give myself 90 minutes.  I feel the need…the need for speed.

Let’s turn and burn.

Still growing my moustache and it looks horrible.  Please, if you want, visit the below link to give a donation.  I will be updating the horrible facial hair look for me this weekend.  THANK you for donating if you do.

EVERGREEN (topics that don’t fade away):

  • Le’Veon Bell didn’t report to the Steelers in time and will sit out the entire season. I am glad, although I recognize his skills would have helped the Steelers for the stretch run.  And, I get wanting the long-term contract to protect himself.  But, my problems are simple.
    • He left his teammates high and dry for the season
    • He sat out during year during his prime, in a position that has the shortest shelf life
    • He gave away $14.5 million, and some people would be offended by that
    • He didn’t communicate his demands or problems during any part of sitting out
    • He didn’t communicate with his own TEAM
    • He was quiet, yet still let himself be spotted at a rec center and jet-skiing
    • He was partly in the right when the Rams gave Gurley HIS contract, which totally jacks this thing up now
    • It is not WHAT he did for me, it is HOW he did it
  • The recent Baylor football game had punching involved in a scuffle. I don’t get this.  I never have.  I get being angry and the natural reaction is to throw a punch.  I get that football is a violent game where your emotions are already peaked.  I get that supporting teammates is paramount.  But, WHY are you hitting someone with a helmet on his head?  Why are you risking obvious greater injury to your hand by throwing the punch?  How do you not understand that the helmet has been designed through advanced technology to not only stop the violence that occurs around it, but to protect the fragile HEAD of a person?  Stop throwing punches, guys.  We see your anger AND your stupidity at the same time.
  • Draymond Green is needed by the Golden State Warriors. He is an athletic gift, wears his emotion on his sleeve, defends his teammates, and defends like a maniac.  And, I don’t think the non-pass was the worst thing he could do.  Not a big deal by itself.  But, not admitting your oversight and allowing yourself to be yelled at was a mistake.  He let his fire take over and then that basically caused a power struggle.  Although he is important to what the Warriors do, he was reminded of the pecking order VERY quickly.  I don’t agree with the team suspending him at all (think they should have left it alone to us public eyes), but it become apparent who the king, queen, bishop, rook, and knight were on that team.  He is an amazing basketball player to say the least.  But, he is the All Star glue, defensive, and role player when it is all said and done.    Keep the fire for the opponents, and own your mistakes.  And you made a small mistake that you let escalate.
  • It is not easy to accept diminishing skills, lesser speed, old age, not going out on top, or your overall lacking imprint on the history of the game thus far. Carmelo Anthony needs to.  He will always be known as a prolific scorer who couldn’t be stopped in his prime.  His jab step was supreme.  He was a one-on-one nightmare for defensive players.  I wouldn’t say though that he made any other players BETTER.  Therefore, him going to a bad New York team from Denver probably wasn’t a smart move.  Then, the OKC experiment.    Now the Rockets test is officially done.  He has been let go.  It wouldn’t be so bad about his stats, but he obviously stated he wasn’t accepting his lesser playing time from the outset of the Rockets journey.  He was never OK with it.  Therefore, combine a little losing at the beginning of the season, and you get some trouble in paradise.  The Rockets letting two defensive wing players go and replacing them with non-defensive him was a mistake anyway.  But, back to HIM.  He needs to retire.  Or, he needs to broadcast wildly that he wants to come off the bench and support other stars.  He needs to come clean or exit stage left.  If there are thoughts in his head that he can still do what he used to do, they are making him delusional.  He is slowly going down the Iverson hole.  By that I mean, he is becoming a shadow of himself and he doesn’t even see it or want to.  If his attitude was better throughout his career, his diminishing skills would be welcomed (see Paul Pierce).  But, his skills are unfortunately WHAT he was in total, and he didn’t bring a championship personality.  Retire early, bud.  Your 15 minutes is up.  And this has nothing to do with the fact that I don’t like you much.
  • Jared Goff made some noise on social media by using Halle Berry as an audible, and then getting at tweet by her that went crazy on Twitter. Here is my thing.  This was brilliant no matter WHAT his intentions were.  I don’t care if that was his favorite play.  Why aren’t there MORE of these audibles through the league?  Why aren’t MORE QB’s having fun with this?  You have the option, with microphones nearby, to call out ANY SINGLE WORD you want.  It doesn’t change your offense.  I am sure the coaches will let you.  Ever since Peyton Manning said “Omaha” over and over, I am surprised more QB’s aren’t showing us their imagination and humor.  Let it go, guys.  Let’s see what you got.  Start calling out Game of Thrones characters.  Start calling out cartoon figures.  Start doing movie quotes.  Heck, I wouldn’t even have a problem with you getting paid to yell out company names and sponsors.  But, this Halle Berry thing just reminded me we should get MORE.
  • Magic is phenomenal. I love it.  I love being tricked.  This week, I caught this video on Deadspin.  It made me happy.  I share it with anyone I pretty much talk to.  Why?  Because not only was it great magic, but it was simplicity winning a WORLD competition in this day of technology with a DECK OF CARDS.  I don’t know the rules of tricks in this competition, but I know this.  Taking a deck of cards and a piece of tape and having us STARE at the screen for 6 minutes and NOT wanting it to end DOES win.  It is brilliant.  He tells a story.  He doesn’t talk.  With everything digital that is around us, he brought it back to the basics we knew as a kid.  It is worth you holding off on whatever meeting or event you are going to right now, and to WATCH this.  THIS IS GREAT MAGIC.  https://gizmodo.com/the-winning-trick-at-the-world-championships-of-magic-m-1830333869

WEEK-FISH (current topics of interest in sports):

  • Vegas seems to have some free time now that baseball is done, I guess. In case you were losing sleep over it, know that they say that this Duke team would be favored by 7.5 points against the Fab Five and this Bama team would be 28.5 underdogs vs. the Buffalo Bills.  I admit to being envious of the people’s jobs who spent the time putting this prognostication together.
  • LaMelo Ball says he wants to play for Duke, UNC, or Kentucky. We appreciate the Golden Child with the abrasive father telling us which schools will want him after his partial high school resume and partial overseas professional experience.
  • I typically am not big on teams being leapfrogged in polls when they don’t lose. But, teams don’t always beat a perennial powerhouse at all, let alone by 34 points.  I am fine with Duke getting #1 over KU.  They are pretty darn good.
  • So, I left work last night and figured I would miss the first half of the Nova-Michigan game, and then catch the fantastic second half of basketball. The LAST thing I expected was the 44-17 deficit I saw when I turned on the tube at home.  Just glad I didn’t realize that the game started that early and missed betting on it, as I would have gone the other way.
  • I am not sharing the link. You can find it on your own.  The Kewan Platt sucker punch was brutal, malicious, and I didn’t even laugh when finding out the twisted joke of him being a criminal justice major at school.  Horrible video clip.
  • I think that schedule makers messed up a little. I think scheduling Army hoops to play Duke hoops the game after they destroyed UK close to Veterans Day was wrong and mean.
  • I wouldn’t have guessed this. Matt Kuchar hasn’t won ANYTHING in FOUR years until last week?  I knew about the Majors, and just figured he picked up a win SOMEWHERE else.  But, it is true.  2014 was the last time the guy won.
  • It doesn’t matter to me that it isn’t in the NBA. It doesn’t matter WHAT league he is in.  Putting up SEVENTY-FIVE and FORTY in the fourth quarter alone was just silly and awesome.  You ARE a marvel, Jimmer Fredette.

NBA

  • Anyone notice that UVA grad Joe Harris has gone from a career average of 8.0 PPG to 13.4 PPG this year?
  • The Nuggets have fallen a little back to earth to temper the initial fast start excitement. Losing to the Rockets and Bucks isn’t the end of the world.  Losing at Memphis isn’t either.  But, losing to the Nets at home IS a problem.  The 48 point game by Murray aside, they need more consistent play from their guards.  Their front court is pretty solid.  I think they might be a good trade partner at the deadline for a small guy.
  • I like the Warriors idea of offering a $100 “in the building” pass for games. Why not?  Others should offer this.  I wonder if it could be a good option for people passing through the city too at games where no visible seats are available.
  • LeBron James took over fifth (Wilt) in all time scoring. This is impressive enough given the fact that he is very much in his prime.  This is MORE impressive given that fact that he is about 200 assists from being in the top 10 for that category too.  No one at the top of the scoring list is even in the top 25 in assists.
  • Can you imagine what the Sixers could be if Fultz had a jump shot of worth? Give them time on the chemistry item.  Butler is too talented for them not to get MUCH better and be a contender, but amazing that their last #1 pick was Mr. Basketball Rick Ankiel.
  • The Caris LeVert injury was disturbing to say the least. The fact that he didn’t even need surgery was miraculous, lucky, and also a sign of his body’s toughness.

MLB

  • Rookie of the Year winners were Ohtani and Acuna. Well deserved, and probably two of the most predicted duos were have had in a decade or so.
  • Manager of the Year winners were Melvin and Snitker. Melvin made a powerhouse of a team purposely going to the thrift store for its players.  Snitker had the Braves in the playoffs about two years before most experts predicted about 3-4 years ago.
  • Cy Young winners were Snell and deGrom. Snell had masterful stats from start to end.  deGrom is the big controversy with a 10-9 record.  I get it.  Wins and losses mean a lot.  But, when no one else was overwhelming and with him posting a ridiculous 1.70 ERA, you can bark at the moon in disagreement all you want, but the choice was correct.
  • Teams will eyeball up all sorts of free agents, and talent will override off the field and on the field problems. But, if I am a GM, I am either getting a good deal on Bryce Harper or Manny Machado or totally passing.  They feel like locker room menaces to me through and through.  They WILL get paid handsomely by a winning team though, and we all know that.
  • Mookie Betts beat out Mike Trout and others for the MVP. You can’t really argue with a 30/30 campaign, being on the best team in baseball, and a batting title.    Everyone KNOWS Trout is the best player in baseball.  Get him in the playoffs so he can become a dynasty MVP guy.

NFL

  • I would never wish injury on ANY player, but I didn’t exactly weep when Dez Bryant tore his Achilles. Why?  Because he sat out half the season hand-selecting his new team, after missing camp and the early learning games.  He was a bandwagon jumper, and Karma got him.  Marshall is different.  He just didn’t have a job and wasn’t that well wanted.
  • Terrelle Pryor was released by one of the worst teams in the NFL (Bills). He is hitting the bottom.  But, being a guy who left one of the most powerful football schools ever and has bounced around since in the best league at his non-college position, he WILL be a HECK of a trivia question 20 years from now.  Maybe even 5-10 years.
  • I like the plan. Dysfunction, underachievement, and media disarray, so why NOT make it simple.  OBJ says the Giants will win eight straight and make the playoffs.
  • Glad they found a new home for the video game football game of the week, the Chiefs-Rams. I get the field conditions were the reason for moving it from Mexico City.  I don’t care what the reason was.  I personally do not think we should be force feeding American football to foreign countries.  They don’t get it, they won’t, they don’t want to, and they like soccer.  Keep it domestic, folks.
  • The Bills released Nathan Peterman. So, the Bills released Pryor and now Peterman.  One of the worse teams is releasing names we know.  That is a sign of a lot of things, but I personally AM curious where the Peterman lad ends up, because I believe he had his fair amount of shots in the NFL.  He can’t fault anyone but himself.  Opportunity knocked and he chose to throw as many interceptions as humanly possible.
  • Do you realize we are going from the almost unwatchable and unhype-able Giants-49ers last week to the must see Chiefs-Rams game of the year on MNF THIS week?
  • I personally thought that 2 or 3 times would be attainable mathematically for hitting football uprights, but 4 would be pretty much impossible.
  • #jets I was just wondering the other day where the heck Matt Barkley had landed.
  • I don’t know about you, and I know that the Bell story is a big one, but I think that the players raiding Bell’s locker being a wire story for OVER a day is reaching a little bit.
  • The Seahawks lost to the Rams, but they are showing signs of life and I wouldn’t want to play them right now. Of course, I also think they lose to the Packers tonight (this won’t post until after the game starts so hope I am right…)
  • I just can’t figure things out. You realize that coaching brilliance and an aging HOF QB can’t just go into Tennessee and beat them up like I and many others thought they would.  You were part of my easy money line parlay, Pats.
  • The Tyreek Hill cameraman touchdown celebration was over the top and once again tells me that too much thought is being put into celebrations these days. Why can’t we all be Barry Sanders and just give the ball to the ref?
  • (the Seahawks can keep their ideas going…they are pretty clever)
  • (I think we continue to allow celebrations, but penalize teams if they aren’t celebrating a meaningful one with an elaborate celebration)
  • The Rams will keep winning lots of games, and have plenty of depth, but I think the Cooper Kupp season ending injury hurts them against the really good teams at the end. I now feel better with my Saints pick for the Super Bowl.
  • I saw the clip, but did we ever get closure on why Derek Carr threw the ball into the ground on fourth down?
  • Remember when I thought the Falcons were going to go on a big winning streak? The loss to the Browns was not a quality one.  Man, the Browns are feisty these days with Baker at the helm.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

  • Of ALL of the Power 5 schools, guess who has the best conference record in the last 14 games? Give up?    13-1.  That is a crazy stat.  The usual suspects of UGA, Bama, Clemson, yada yada yada follow the powerhouse smart school.
  • Davidson football rushed for 789 yards…and lost.
  • Kentucky JUST had us thinking they were for real, and then went to Tennessee and laid an egg.
  • I believe that Bobby Petrino has NOW had his fair amount of chances for coaching. He can be a great coordinator and IS a genius, but I would say being the big fish is not in his bloodlines.  Give him some time off so he can go do something really dumb OFF the field.
  • I remember a long time ago when I thought that Auburn would be undefeated going into last weekend’s big matchup in Athens.
  • The Mike Gundy snowflake rant was kind of like a not so funny Mike Leach ramble.
  • (because Mike Leach is just the best)

THIS AND THAT (pop culture, Fillerbuster thoughts and quick hitters):

  • The comeback artists on The Voice was a good idea in spirit, but the two singers who emerged not only sounded like crap, but picked the worst songs you could pick for a singing show.
  • Why does The Voice take their sweet time in eliminating any contestant weekly, and then eliminates HALF the show all in one episode?
  • Avery’s (Lindsey’s sister) “27” party is being hosted at our house on Saturday, and everyone will be wearing dresses apparently, given the theme my wife picked randomly. I apparently might be a judge.  I assume you will have some pics at some point.
  • We have our rescheduled magic show on Friday. Lindsey and I share an absolute LOVE of anything magic.  We LOVE magic shows, movies, etc.  As I mentioned in Evergreen, I love being stumped, and don’t even mind never figuring out how they did something.  The enjoyment factor is my value.
  • The Prestige is a movie you have to see if you have dodged it up to this point. Good plot, good presentation, and one of those endings that will floor you like Sixth Sense or Usual Suspects.  It is probably one of the best magic movies of all time, and makes Now You See Me look silly.  The Illusionist is my second favorite one.
  • I don’t like having a weekend where it is marginal weather and I am too busy for golf. I have the itch and I am jonesing to play the next nice day.  I JUST got into my groove with my swing.
  • Iron Maiden is around still? They just released new tour dates for the U.S.
  • Speaking of the 80’s, I am starting my research on this Ghost band. They have my attention like Hinder did years ago…not totally letting the 80’s sound die, yet finding a way to somehow appeal to present hip people on the charts.
  • The greatest thing about my new house is that the usual pain in the ass DMV trip is a block away now.   Just realized my driver’s license expires on my birthday, and always look forward to the trip to the DMV to see those people in life you don’t have day to day contact with.
  • Rod Stewart now has a Vegas residency. Aerosmith now has a residency.  I am telling you, people.  Your fancy Vegas “shows” are phasing out a bit.  You better catch the classics while you can.  Absinthe is the answer to whatever you ask.  But, music will be taking over.  They simply bring in more people.  Dollars and cents.
  • The body bearers pre-game special last weekend was very cool and I had never heard all the details about what that military outfit did.
  • Early Bird on Southwest is BS now at $25 each way. I guess I WAS the one complaining about getting B6 on Early Bird, so I guess I can’t complain.
  • Speaking of airlines, I have had TSA Precheck for years, and I found out the other day you can randomly NOT get it by a lottery. That is fine now that I know that.  But, on our last trip, watching my wife head to the trains while I had to wait in that horrible “normal” line was irritating as hell.  Look at your tickets these holidays, folks.  It can happen, and the busy holiday season I assume would make that travel deathly.
  • I love people who sing in the military, but that military band at MNF was just weird to watch in my opinion.
  • Stan Lee died, and that was a sad day. I wasn’t a big comic kid, but I get his beloved status.  He brought us a lot of characters.  He was 95 years old though.  The guy lived a pretty badass life.  Don’t feel too sad for him.
  • The person at work who thinks she is the only person in the world with a dog now and watches the damn thing from her phone constantly, luckily for us, gets to share the magical moments of her puppy in the SNOWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!
  • Our work partner has brought us bagels for years every week. The jalapeno salsa cream cheese that comes with it I relate to the Dave Matthews Band.  I told everyone and their mother how good it was, it has become a hit, and now everyone eats it.  It is like the cream cheese released What Would You Say and became a hip band.  It was better as a secret and seeing it for $4 every week at Trax.
  • I won both games at fantasy football this past week, and given my lack of effort every season on this part of my life, that is impressive. I am the most knowledge losing fantasy participant there has ever been.  But, I like to LIKE my players too.  I want a fun team.
  • Plus, as analytical as my brain is, it doesn’t seem to be able to process fantasy trades. I just can’t comprehend on what is a fair trade.
  • They made ANOTHER season of Making a Murderer? Did the story continue, is it still going on, or other?
  • Thanks for the very much increased traffic on this blog. I appreciate your readership and tell your friends.  But, I still am confused how most people are STILL reading the August installment of Feed The Wolf.  Must have accidentally linked something in that one with something viral…
  • My new thing is having brownie stuff in ice cream. I didn’t even know that brownies had a “core” but I have ice cream with brownie core in it, and it is ridiculous.
  • I have a colleague whose mom went to the ER because of a cat bite. My fears are once again confirmed.  The cats my wife bought me will eventually end me.
  • I don’t want to rush life. Not at all.  But, when April gets here with the final season of Game of Thrones, I won’t mind that timeline being done.
  • It is great handling international business at work now these days, but my OCD doesn’t really appreciate coming into a bunch of emails when I get to work at 630.
  • The Ray Donovan show is star studded and looks like my next addiction.

BEDLAM

  • Norman bleeds football and it is refreshing (see last blog).
  • Norman gets cold too, and the football game was COLD.
  • Whataburger was pretty decent, but I still will take an In N Out one any day for fast food. Plus, I froze up in the drive thru and don’t think I maximized my purchase.
  • We rented a Toyota Camry, and if I wanted a cheaper non-sports utility car in a place that didn’t get snow, I think I would roll with that car…nice ride.
  • The only late liquor store only sold warm beer in Norman, and I don’t understand that concept. If you are desperately buying late beer because your flight was a later one, you are asking us to roll the beers TOO in ice?
  • Pregame was nuts, but we seem to get tired of lines and land in the spacious Logies each time we are there…cool spot.
  • Lindsey’s dad’s college buddy played football for OU, so it is always cool attending the OU Club events and seeing all of the former stars in the crowd…and the free food.
  • The line to get in the stadium was obnoxious, but standing around all of the Heisman trophies was pretty stellar as always.
  • I find the weirdest thing about Memorial Stadium in Norman is that they show OU’s score first. Looks weird to me.  Home team is always last.
  • In the track meet I watched, Oklahoma State had THIRTY-NINE first downs against the swiss cheese OU defense. That was the most amount of first downs ALL YEAR for FBS schools.
  • I had hope in the OU defense, and took the under in a small side bet. It was 80.  I lost.
  • Louie’s is the place to go pre and post-game.
  • I just realized that Logies is two doors down from Louie’s. So similar in naming.
  • So, I have been to four Norman games, I believe. TWO of them, including this one, ended in a failed two-point conversion by the opposing team.
  • Lindsey’s dad is funny when he has a couple of pops and around his college town. He laughs the hardest I ever hear him laugh each time when exchanging college stories with his old buddies.
  • I believe the Days Inn in Norman might be the worst hotel I have stayed at in the last long while aside from The Masters Inn in Augusta.
  • The Diner on Main Street is worth the wait to its limited number of tables.
  • The Mont is a VERY cool place to visit there for drinks or a meal.
  • They like watching the Cleveland Browns on Sundays in Norman.

CLOSING:

Next blog?  Probably Tuesday of next week.  I might post a non-template list of what I give thanks to for the holiday in sports.  Shorter one though.  Should be fun if that is what it comes to.

The theme name?  Quote by my favorite magician, Harry Houdini.

That’s it for today.  Hope you enjoyed or are at least more informed.  Remember two things.  First, feed yourself, feed your family, but always, always remember to…feed the wolf.  Second,  if you can’t spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, then you are the sucker.  Will I blog again?  That is a CLOWN question, bro.

PICS:

Score and yards…when the game still had over half a quarter left…

My lady all decked out and ready…

So cool to wait in line by all of the Heisman trophies…

And the street where the party all happens…

And, in case you care about what I threw back in the pond, here you go…
