You Were Never Really Here
YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE
By The Fillerbuster
The Cast 051618
This is premature. This is backwards. This is not the typical. Why? Because I LOVE bringing a movie, song, or other pop culture element into a sports theme. But, we have a problem (I won’t make “Houston, we have a problem” jokes until after tonight’s game if it doesn’t go well). I haven’t seen the movie. I PLANNED on seeing it. But, I will tell you my theme regardless. And I was going to organize, tailor, and make this pretty. But, I am in the process of moving, am busy at work, but still am backed up. Therefore, this will be a semi-organized mess. But, this is what I love doing. I love taking advantage of my wife going to Melting Pot, flipping between basketball and hockey games, and just WRITING. So, that is what I am going to do. Let’s see where it takes us.
I guess you don’t have to worry about spoilers on the movie at least.
By the way, is Joaquin Phoenix’s career going like Daniel Day Lewis’s suddenly? Dude comes out with so few of movies, but then rules the screen when he does. However the movie goes, 86% on Rotten Tomatoes is nothing to sneeze at.
Let’s move. I feel the need…the need for SPEED.
EVERGREEN:
I should probably focus on the evergreen part before the two games start. What do I mean “you were never really here?”
Simple. In the Eastern Conference Finals in the NBA, we have:
- The best player of our generation
- Surrounded by misfits
- Surrounded by NEWLY ASSEMBLED misfits
So, LeBron is not only lacking talent. He is lacking chemistry. But, since his second home is in the NBA Finals win or lose, he is still here, even after a frightful Game 7 against the Pacers. Ratings love him, love or hate him. The Raptors decided to be regular season heroes who disappeared. They use to call me on my cell phone. See what I did there? Now, they are gone. I know hoops, but I thought IF LeBron and Company won, it would go at least SIX games. Never saw the sweep coming.
We thought THIS was the year LeBron would never really be here. The Raptors decided to go back to A Quiet Place, because they WERE here, and then were NOT here.
The Celtics are here too even though we never thought they would be here. They are not only the true definition of a solid team 1 through 10 with a genius in waiting in Stevens, but play literally beautiful basketball when it is all said and done. Extra passes, cuts without the ball, making other teammates BETTER. And apparently, the Sixers decided they either:
- Were too young to win yet
- Underestimated DRASTICALLY the coaching skills of Brad Stevens
- Decided to lose and THEN immediately start recruiting LeBron
- Decided to disappear like Fultz’s jump shot
Neither was ever really here. But, they are.
We kind of expected the Warriors and Rockets to be lined up from Day 1, so not surprising. So, who never was really here? The rest of the Western Conference. They probably should have just saved time for everyone and not played the damn playoffs on that side. I vote the next time this happens we just simply have a best of 15 series with these two teams. THERE is your new playoff format. Because, no matter what happens tonight, DAMN these games are FUN between these two teams. The rest? They need years, experience, and maybe more talent. Except OKC. No one is sure what is going on in that city.
The Golden Knights. Who is NOT rooting for them outside of Tampa, DC, or Winnipeg? Raise your hands. The fact that I am a writer and not in the room with you makes no difference. No one raised their hands. Got it. They are something that is special. If they win the Cup, we wish we could take all of that special, positive energy, put it in a bottle, and slowly release it to the world so everyone can just feel good all the time and get along with everyone else. THIS is what sports is about, people. Taking a bunch of castoffs in a new city where disaster just struck, having them not only embrace the entire city and nation, but win TOO???? Wow.
The Golden Knights were never really here from the beginning, and their lack of presence just gets louder every single day.
Paper rosters can tell us who is never really here, but that is simply why they play the games.
WEEKFISH:
- Iverson’s “practice” anniversary was recently celebrated, and if you didn’t watch his clip at least once, then you are losing out in life. Here you go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGDBR2L5kzI
- I think cocky, brash, spoiled NBA players giving their coach credit is one of the greatest things during these playoffs. Brad Stevens is a quiet, polite mad genius. And no votes for COY???
- Rodney Hood not entering a game is just unprofessional in all aspects.
- The Reds got Matt Harvey, and hopefully being sent to the worst team in the league will brighten his outlook on how he treats life in general. Contender to nobody in a flash.
- I am not a gamer, but the mere POSSIBILITY that Fortnite, a video game, had anything to do with David Price’s wrist injury really makes my day.
- …almost as much as Ichiro not knowing who Tom Brady was…
- Hey, the Yankees are good again. Say what you want, and hate who you hate, but the MLB is better overall when the Evil Empire IS good…AND with young guys, not overpaid has beens.
- Wait until AFTER these playoffs to do that MJ vs. LeBron article, ESPN.
- The fact that I read an article on the Browns being “sneaky contenders” proves that writing is fun and you can make anything sound believable if you are strong enough in that corner. Remember, like Costanza said, “it’s not a lie, if YOU believe it.”
- Bortles stopped a thief from stealing his own truck at a house party. This means he is 2-0 against the Steelers this year.
- (I admit that I stole that from Twitter, but you can’t tell me it is really, really good material)
- It is May 16th. I wonder if Nadal has dropped a set on clay yet.
- I admit to stopping my life for 10 minutes last week and actually WATCHING the National Cornhole Championships. It was great.
- I can’t even differentiate between the Morris twins sometimes when tired or foggy, but at least I know one of them is the best at guarding LeBron, self-proclaimed.
- I now dislike Webb Simpson because he ruined what could have been a GREAT Tiger Woods comeback day. I always say this though. IF you have won a Major (Webb snagged the US Open years ago), you are NOT blowing that kind of lead, no matter who is on the leaderboard.
- Lucas Glover’s wife is crazy we have found out. Poor guy wins a Major, and STILL has to deal with his wife going apeshit when he shoots a 78. He won a MAJOR. Leave his freaking mother alone.
- I think all of our lives are better when there is a Metta World Peace sighting. Well, Casey got fired (probably deservedly considering that roster he had shouldn’t have gotten swept), and now Metta tells us that Drake could coach that team. I would say that is reaching, but that is normal for Metta, right?
- LeBron’s recall on that Boston run I could watch over and over…kind of like the respectful version of watching Iverson’s practice thing over and over.
- Don’t look now, but the BRAVES have the best NL record?
- Couldn’t they put Greg Hardy against a normal MMA fighter in his debut? They had to put him against another guy who also was a football player?
- It is great sports betting got legalized. About time. But, for those people suddenly wanting to find a way to close out their Bovada accounts, I would wait a little while. Here is the thing. It is legalized, but the states still have to do their thing first. Look for casinos in Delaware, Pennsylvania, Jersey, and Maryland to have it set up first.
- I know these things. I sell to casinos.
- Federer is the oldest #1 player in the world…again.
- What is scary about what the Warriors have done this postseason is that I think Curry is still only about 75% healthy…tops.
- Remember when we used to LOVE Robinson Cano? Me too. Getting caught cheating right after an injury will change that opinion quickly. I think they are ballparking an $11 mil loss in salary over that time. Not mattress money.
- Cue the 1980’s music. OU has the #1 recruiting class in football. But, for some reason besides my wife’s family being diehard Sooner fans, it just feels right again. The Baker Effect.
- I am very sad that World Cup rosters are out and we aren’t in it. Very, very sad and that is not sarcastic. I am country, no club.
- An MJ documentary is coming to Netflix. Make it 1000 hours long. I will adjust my life to watch it.
- The Kings went from #7 to #2 in the NBA draft lottery. Big jump. Welcome Luka Doncic, Sactown. You will love him.
- Budenholzer will be the coach of the Bucks allegedly. What is MORE crazy about this is that the Bucks sent The Freak and Middleton TO the meeting with him so everyone was aligned. I am very quickly becoming a Bucks fan. I love what that team is doing right now.
ODDS AND ENDS:
- I played pool the other night. I am sober these days, so I am still adjusting to have complete balance, angle awareness, and table smarts during my runs. I wouldn’t play me at pool anymore if I were you unless you just want an experience.
- I am still rooting for Britton AKA Mini Matt Damon in The Voice as we are in the final four, but Jackie Foster singing my favorite song, Here I Go Again, was easily my favorite moment of the season. Thanks, Jackie.
- I don’t understand why my wife asks me what I want for dinner when one of the choices on a given night is pizza. I would eat pizza every meal for the rest of my life. Giving me that choice randomly is useless unless SHE is in the mood for pizza.
- I drink 12 glasses of water a day when it has ice in it. When it does not, I am around about two glasses. Stop breaking, work ice machine.
- Today, I booked a work trip and purposely am flying BACK from a different airport because Frontier was the only option at the origination airport. Remember when we all loved Frontier? Now, we just hope the wings don’t fall off.
- Nothing More is my new workout band. Yes, they have been around for a lot of years. Why are they suddenly different? I looked it up. They fired their singer and the drummer took over on vocals. Listening to that guys voice makes you KNOW you shouldn’t try to make it in music. That dude was the freaking drummer and sings like THAT for a band not even in the mainstream. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yo5fE-Zl-V4
- This band is awesome and what I am jamming out to in my workouts. If you want more, I would recommend: Go To War, Jenny, Here’s to the Heartache, If I Were, and Do You Really Want It.
- I love the new Progressive commercial because they sing Heaven Is A Place On Earth and I used to be in love with and worship Belinda Carlisle.
- Got a weird feeling that something dealing with Han Solo will be either the next blog or one after’s theme. That movie better be GOOD.
- Every time I go up to my wife’s parents’ place for a holiday, I practice horseshoes. I say “practice” because I am pretty much lethal at the game. Thanks, Dad. I have my lofty sit shot and the wicked heater you taught me still going.
- Yes, I think my Dad still reads this, and you would KNOW one of his two throws would be a ringer, so you just had to hope you got two on your two throws to have a chance.
- If you are weird and haven’t seen Deadpool, go see the movie. It is sarcastically FANTASTIC, and I assume the next one will hold its own.
- Phil Collins is still touring? He was old when I became a fan of him in the 80’s…except I was 8.
- No, I have intentions of stopping wearing my Masters vest any time soon, and my wife is simply glad I don’t wear it to bed at night.
- Seeing Josh Blue a week or two ago on the Tonight Show was cool. He is a Denver guy, and is brilliant and smart on stage. For those who don’t know him before you Google it, know that the experience is very DIFFERENT watching him and you will understand why when you watch it. Not your typical guy in the world.
- One of my depressing things about having no time except to type this out real fast without editing is IF I had more time, I would have more pictures. I miss those blogs.
- The Mini Derby in Denver was fun and you should go watch tiny dogs and tiny horses race next year.
- My wife hit a $2 trifecta box on the derby, but we were at the mini-derby so I Googled it from my phone. If you are curious, it paid out $283 and I learned more about horse race bets in the two hours after that I ever have in my life. I just didn’t understand why it didn’t give you an amount right after the Derby. NOW, I understand.
- I now have a Facebook page for my blog. I have no idea what I did or if it is right. So, go to the page and either let me know what I set up wrong, or like it, or whatever you FB people actually do online religiously. https://www.facebook.com/thefillerbuster/

POP CULTURE:
- Westworld: Fight through the confusion as I think it is only going to get better. But, my conspiracy theory about this show is that because a lot of characters are robots (or partial robots-a HA!!!!), they are harder to latch on to then human shows. But, I would watch this show for the theme song ALONE.
- And, they need to start killing a few people we like so it does resonate like GOT. NEVER get attached to a character.
- Barry: Catch the entire season. This is probably my favorite active show on TV right now. Best mix of realistic action and humor you will find out there. The ending I thought was the ending but was NOT. The last five minutes blew my mind.
- Billions: I am behind and only three episodes in, but man I wish I had more time in life. It is freaking fantastic.
- Breaking Bad: Done season 1, and waiting until after the move to get mad at my wife for not making herself available for viewing times (of course, she will come back at me with the true notion that every night has basketball and hockey still). Good point, wife.
- Silicon Valley: The season ended brilliantly as it usually does. Never will you find such a perfect mix of awkward, intense, climatic scenes as this show.
- The Gift: I watched this movie for an hour and took a break. The first hour is BRILLIANT. Did the second half let me down? But, it wasn’t quite as good as the initial hour and therefore I would just give it a B+. You should watch it though. Disturbing to say the least. Well done.
So, no movie review for the theme. I will try and knock it out this weekend and try NOT to make it my theme again.
Also, no work on my site recently. I have to wait until after the move, so June will be that time of revisiting this. And after the possibility of me entering the KKFN contest, which will take some work.
This is that contest I might enter. I made the final three people in Denver at Dream Job for ESPN back in the day.

Didn’t like the blog today? Well, just pretend like you were never really here. See what I did there?
That’s it for today. Hope you enjoyed or are more informed. Will I blog again? That is a CLOWN question, bro. Peace.
Let’s leave you with a picture of Lucas Glover’s crazy wife to send you on your way…we wish she was never really here without a doubt.
